Sadly, if you want regular comments, you may have to adopt a new layout. :( I'm not super good at manipulating CSS, but I can do something along the lines of what I did at fmabigbang. Maybe someone more talented can adapt your current header into an S2 layout for you?
Do you have a clean copy of the graphical components of your layout? I think it would definitely be possible to keep much of the visuals and adapt it into an easy to read S2 format.
I just managed to grab the background and put it on my desktop, so it's definitely possible. I did some code tweaks to my own layout, and back when I had more free time, I actually made one for someone on my flist. The thing about your header is that it's not one of those neat little rectangular images you can just stow at the top of a standard-ish S2 layout, it's quite big, and the layout's built around the header rather than the other way around. Is the person who made it for you still on LJ and able to tweak it/give advice?
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced I have all the images in a folder on my external hard drive at home. I remember that I had saved them in case something happened and I had to restore it. Unfortunately the person who made it for me was first consumed by WOW and then disappeared from my online life forever. I'm sad, she was my original beta for Sex Ed and I miss her, her name was Circe. =(
It's actually the whole image I managed to pull off the layout. I've heard you mention circe in fic posts from way back when. Inevitable a part of online fandom life as it is, it's sad when people disappear.
The new commenting feature is awful, especially if you comment a lot or in threads (like I do). I fear it, so just in case, I started to mirror on my dreamwidth acct (that I never use). I don't plan on running away from LJ anytime soon <3

If you look at the comments under the rollout of 88 in lj news, you can find a link to the translated post about it with links to the new look. It's essentially being geared towards a more facebook style.
The head of LJ Russia has basically been a snarky dick and has(I think out of sheer spite), said he'd consider fixing everything but the comment subject bars. Reading some of what he's said is turning my stomach. I'll probably never delete my LJ, but man is this debacle and the way it is being handled making me glad there's another option.
Yeah I don't use my DW much either just mirror it with this one. I like LJ although I don't get on it much anymore but still why the constant changes drive me insane! Oh yeah and I have an S2 layout now so I don't get the weird stuff if you are using an S1 layout :( I loved my old one too.
