If there is one or more people on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.
He had never realized before just how close the Edward came to the gender line until now, when it was crossed. It was the same face - Alphonse's face he had not seen before, except in a very old picture - but Edward's he knew as well as his own family, that tiny button nose and soft jawline. It looked equally attractive on a male body as a female body, and now... Two small bumps, twin alien peaks, were pressing insidiously against the paper-thin front of Edward's hospital gown, and for the moment all Roy could do was stare.
Edward seemed to snap out of whatever torpor he--she--was caught in when Alphonse threw herself bodily at her sibling, yelling something incoherent. Panicked, Edward threw her limbs out, but when Alphonse collided she somehow ended up twining around, was not deflected in the least.
"Are you all right!?" Roy asked reflexively, seeing the pained expression on Edward's face (so disturbing; with Alphonse in front of the tits the boy almost looked like a boy again). Edward shook her head once frantically, and Roy wanted to smack himself. Stupid question.
"Are you injured?" He tried again, and this time Edward deigned to open his mouth. Alphonse was already tearing at remained of her bro--sister's hospital gown, while at the same time still refusing to let go of her sibling for a second; apparently attempting to do a diagnosis by osmosis.
"...no." Edward finally managed, and Roy's mind reeled again to recognize that yes, this was their same Edward, even though her voice was rusty from tears or some other stress the timber remained true. Edward's tremulous alto hadn't yet truly broken, and now, he thought wildly, with a hint of despair, it probably never would.
"Brother," was all Alphonse said in response, and drew her sibling closer. Edward seemed uncomfortable being coddled in front of Roy,and he politely looked away, gave the boy as much dignity as he had left.
"We have to get you out of here," Alphonse said, more to Roy than to his sibling, and Edward reluctantly nodded.
"I don't have a car," Roy pointed out. "But I can get one. Where are you headed?"
"Anywhere," Edward offered on a gasp. "Can't go back...there..." Alphonse nodded and tightened his hands around his sibling's shoulder's protectively, looked back over his own to fix Roy with a searing gaze.
"We don't have anywhere TO go," Alphonse pointed out. "I've been staying at the hospital, but with brother gone..." At the word 'brother' Edward let out a low, hopeless bark of a laugh, and Alphonse looked at him sharply.
"...I believe you now, Al," Edward said softly. Her eyes were beyond caring, glazed and horrible, and they made Roy shiver involuntarily. I have seen the end of the world, those eyes said. Nothing good ever came of it.
"What?"
"I heard it...speak," Edward said, struggling even now to put a little distance between herself and the other two. Alphonse clung like a leech, but Roy could see Edward mentally withdrawing as well, a prison of solitude that all the snuggling in the world couldn't cure.
"What happened?" he asked, more to give Edward focus than anything else. He had seen this in soldiers, shell-shocked on the battlefield; had talked Maes down once when the world got too much. "What did it say?"
Edward gave another harsh, bitter laugh, and ground his automail hand harshly into a fist until it made a groaning noise. Roy wondered, for a moment, what it was even doing there if the broken flesh leg had been restored. Maybe it was because Edward had already been missing his right arm and left leg. Maybe there were some things that were too broken to be sullied further.
The thought was only mild comfort.
"It said...fuck, it said we're fucked," Edward hissed at him, clutching at his sister's little sundress. There was muck on it now; it might never recover. "It really is just there to toy with us. I just wanted Al's body back..." Edward held up a hand before Alphonse could protest. "The RIGHT one. The one he's supposed to have. But it twisted my words around...and then this was supposed to be some huge fucking favor." She snorted. "Yeah, right."
She tilted her head up and looked directly at him, still obviously shaky, and there was a rawness to her tone that Roy had not heard for a long, long while.
"The Gate was never going to give us power. It doesn't believe in equivalent exchange."
He wanted to protest, but when he opened his mouth and saw that the same desperation lived in Alphonse's eyes, there were no longer words.
"Equivalent exchange does not exist, sir," Alphonse said softly, stroking a hand down her sister's back, and lowly, shortly, and very very slightly Edward Elric began to cry.
