Fun with the Fords

We had a family christmas get together tonight. We all sat around and ate. It's about the only thing we do at these functions. I sat at a table with my brothers. One older, one younger. My older brother works for Delta. He has for years. I've never been clear on what it is he does exactly. So tonight I decided to find out.
Dena: What is it you do exactly?
Randy: Work for Delta
Dena: Well I know that, but what do you do..don't you fix airplanes?
Randy: No, haven't done that for about 5 years.
Dena: Well then what do you do?
Randy: I over see two bays and keep track of accounts and blah blah blah [I lose interest at this point, my baby niece is being cute, my son is yelling across the room]
Randy: So that's what I do.
I still have no clue as to what my brother does at Delta. I think my younger brother works for some trucking company....yeah.
There was no more putting it off, tonight was the night. Aeris stared at himself in the mirror.
Kamree came rushing though, dressed but nothing tucked, tied or buttoned. "Aeris, we have to be there in less than an hour, you don't want to be late to your own birthday party!"
Aeris did want to be late. So late in fact that he didn't' have to go. But how could he tell Kamree that? Kamree had worked so hard and so long and had been so meticulous as only Kamree could be. Aeris sighed and shrugged into this shirt. Kamree came and stood beside him, he began buttoning, tucking and tying.
The day before the royal entourage had shown up. The King had come. Aeris was a bit put off figuring his father would not make the trip all the way inland just to attend a birthday celebration unless there was something else involved. Aeris knew what the something else was; it was not just any birthday it was his 50th birthday. The birthday of ascension. Where by tradition of the royal house of the Kingdom of the Steep the prince was officially made Heir Apparent. Not something Aeris was particularly looking forward too. It would mean a trip home to the island, some big pompous ceremony, some rigorous boring ceremonial kneeling and the like; he just wasn't up for it. He wanted only to live on the mainland, make his art and be Kamree's lover. What was so bad with all of that?
Kamree turned to him and began fussing with Aeris' tie. "Sweetheart are you going to wear your curls up or loose? I think loose, they are so charming when they brush your cheeks..and oh hurry Aeris...we're going to be late!" After gushing all of this Kamree ran off to find shoes. Aeris smiled after him. He finished tying his tie, pulled on his vest, tucked his shirt and buttoned his pants. To please Kamree he was wearing a traditional cut tuxedo, but to please himself it was in a daring violet shade, complimentary to his eyes.
He sat on the edge of the bed to pull on his socks. His mind wandered again to his Steep upbringing and everything everyone would be expecting of him. Being made Heir Apparent came with other responsibilities, like finding a wife. Aeris had no desire for any woman, let alone a wife. Besides, the King usually did the hunting and choosing. Not that there would be much of a selection. A royal generally married a royal, and there were fewer than 200 royal sea elves in the whole of the Steep. Maybe he should just marry Kamree. He stood up and went over to his vanity and opened the middle drawer. He plucked out a small velvet bag and went back to the bed, sitting again. He emptied the contents of the bag into his palm. It was a ring. Unlike the heavy signet of office his father wore it was more delicate. It was a representation of the Sea Dragon, curling back on itself, all in silver and platinum and very old and rare. It was the ring his grandfather had given his grandmother, his father had given his mother and the ring he had asked for on his last visit home.
Taka was a sensitive mother. She hadn't pressed her son as to why he had wanted the family heirloom. She thought she knew her son's heart well enough to guess whom it was intended for and perhaps she should have spoken. Aeris remembered her small hand on his cheek and her soft smile. But she hadn't. Whatever trials her prince son might face had to be faced on his own. It was experiences that shaped a King, not a mother's fears. He rolled the ring over in his palm. Years ago when the reawakened romance was new Aeris had pressed for and received permission from the King to give Kamree a title. Kamree was considered a royal consort. Azrael was indulgent in this. He was not above having had a consort in his youth before Taka entered his life. So it was with Aeris. Only Aeris didn't intend to give up his consort. Aeris didn't intend to give up anything. He slipped the ring into his pocket. Tonight might be his birthday party, but Kamree would be the one to receive the present. He got up to hunt for his own shoes.
