FMA Meme Day 3
Oct. 18th, 2011 08:51 amDay 3- Your favorite character
Why should a simple question be so hard? FMA delivers an overload of full developed and interesting characters. My top three, for the record are Roy, Ed and Ling. Everyone knows that, I don't hide it. The quandry becomes who do I like the best?
Insofar as actual growth and development during the series, Ed has everyone beat hands down. We see his progression fully. We grow with Ed, both grieving and celebrating when he does; so, Ed would be the perfect shoo-in for a favorite character, and rightfully so. He is such an open book and so easy to emphasize with it's almost impossible not to love Ed from the very beginning.
Roy, on the other hand, shows both growth and regression during the series. He shows a very human quality, he topples from his pedestal, he becomes one of us, and the he ascends again to show us what we are all capable of. Roy is a very intricate and dynamic character. The right mix of arrogance and humility. He is the struggle with what we know in our heads and what we feel in our hearts and he is not an unaffected person. Plus he's drop dead gorgeous.
Ling is an enigma. At first he seems a lot like any other fox-faced comedian to Ed's straight man, but he develops into so much more. There was no more prefect a candidate for Greed. A mix of confidence and wrecklessness that in the end, did work for him, but the risk was high, and it could have so easily turned out another way. And in the wake of releasing Greed he learns selflessness and compassion and realizes to be a good leader, he must lead other than himself. I love Ling in all his many capacities in the story. I love him best when he's at his worst. He is a metaphorical rags to riches tale, who endears himself well.
SO, I guess, if I HAVE to pick, I pick... Roy Mustang. I identify with him the most.
