Day 1- How were you exposed to the phenomenon that is Fullmetal Alchemist?I'm sure everyone who knows me knows this story by now. I use to pick up the american version of New Type. One day a postcard feel out of my New Type. Upon inspection it was a guy or girl with a metal arm and a robot. Pretty cool, only it had a mech in it. I'm not usually a fan of mech (Escaflowne being the exception), so I didn't think much of it. But I liked the art, so I pinned the postcard to my corkboard (by my computer at the time, and I still have the same cork board and I still have the postcard behind my desk now). Not a lot happened after that. I remember I did see an icon or two on LJ from the series. One was Ed from the dreadful third episode, sitting at a table with a knife and fork and the icon read: I learned everything I know from eating brains (or something like that) and I thought it was funny. (Didn't connect until later this was an FMA icon)
One weekend
hakuyama and I decided to have a stay at home all anime weekend. To this end we decided a trip to Suncoast was in order to buy some new anime and try out a new series. We arrived at Suncoast and soon had a purchase in hand (I don't remember what it was), when
hakuyama found a large cardboard cut out of Ed and Al holding the first and second DVD of Fullmetal Alchemist.
The convo went like this:
H: Hey, I've seen this on LJ, it's called Fullmetal Alchemist. I hear it's pretty good.
S: Oh yeah?
H: What do you think? This or [series we had in hand, still don't remember it]
S: I dunno, what do you think?
H: Well, I'd rather try out this Fullmetal Alchemist.
So I put the other DVD back and we decided to buy only the first DVD of FMA in case we didn't like it.
That night we went back and bought the second.
The rest is history. You guys have
hakuyama to blame for my being inflicted onto FMA fandom.
