Printing is my life and it sux
I so need to get out of full service commercial printing. I so need to go out and smell the fresh air and see the sunshine and not have to worry about getting 9000 plastic formed 4 color signs to Subway. Oh I so need a new job...
Anyways...
Aeris caught up with him within half a block, falling neatly into step beside him. If the winter wind was pinking Kamree's cheeks it couldn't be seen beneath his dark skin, but Aeris' ear tips attested to the cold. Aeris had shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his pleated trousers and had pulled his tweed jacket on over his sweater before leaving the cozy confines of McEver's.
Kamree himself wore a long black lined trench over his dress trousers, dress shirt, tie and suspenders. He had a brief council meeting that afternoon and had to look the part. The black heels of his loafers clicked on the sidewalks and he tugged at the wrist of one leather glove, grateful that the local department store had finally started carrying the modified three fingered versions. Aeris bumped shoulders with him affectionately.
"Should I meet you for lunch?" Aeris' violet eyes met Kamree's own indigo blue ones, "you said the meeting was just a formality to set next months itinerary, didn't you?" Aeris risked pinking his fingers in the chill to slip his arm around Kamree's as they walked, his cheerful voice carrying over the sound of traffic buzzing by them down the road.
"I don't take things like 'short' council meetings for granted anymore, why don't I call you from the chambers after we've let out? That way you won't be sitting around somewhere checking your watch every five minutes" Kamree smiled as he replied, leaning toward Aeris a little. What Kamree really wanted was to buy himself some time to make plans. Birthday plans. Aeris' was turning 50 next month. It was a turning point for most elves, but because of his long time connection to the Steep royalty through Aeris, Kamree also knew this birthday marked a special one for him. His birthright, to be made officially the heir apparent.
The Steep elves were a legend all to themselves. They were divided into two groups. The warrior class, from which the royalty came and the common class. The two classes were equally distinct. Steep elven royalty were a tall, pale creature that came in a variety of color and temperament. Aeris was green, sporting green spots along his neck and the middle of his back, over the crest of his buttocks and to the back of his knees. His joint points were also green when he was submerged in sea water, his knees and elbows, his ear tips and his..well...more masculine parts. Kamree smiled a little. On the other hand, his King father, Azrael, was a lovely shade of sea blue. Aeris often teased Kamree, saying he had a crush on the king, and maybe he did, a little.
Aeris' mother was not of the warrior class. She was in fact the daughter of a wealthy commoner merchant. She was olive toned with dark black curls and huge, luminous hazel green eyes. She was beautiful and diminutive, and she passed her short stature to her only warrior class birthed son, Aeris. Making him quite a bit shorter than his cousins. Aeris commented every now and again about it, making a little joke about being the 'shrimp' of the royal court. Aeris found this terribly amusing; he was one to enjoy his own puns. Aeris had six little sisters. Step stair children with only a few years between them, evidence of their father's attempt to produce another male heir. Each of Aeris' sisters was a perfect miniature of their mother, olive skinned and dark maned and lovely. It wasn't that the King was unhappy with his girls, quite the contrary. He doted on them, but he seem to despair of ever having another pale skinned, color enhanced son like Aeris. To that end Aeris was his only heir.
So with Aeris' birthday looming, his 'accession' as the King had termed it, Kamree thought to make this one special. It wasn't just any birthday that your boyfriend was officially recognized as the next King. Kamree looked up from his musings as Aeris steered him into a small shop near the corner.
"What's this?" Kamree asked as he was pulled in the door, the small doorbell above them jingled.
"Just a little jewelry shop" Aeris said, "I need to buy a chain."
"Chain?" Kamree asked as Aeris released him and headed for the counter. Aeris didn't wear jewelry, or rather very much jewelry. Kamree guess this was because in his natural habitat he was in constant contact with seawater, and that couldn't be too good for precious metals or gems. But he sighed and browsed a nearby glass display case as Aeris bought a length of silver chain and had the jeweler put clasps on the ends, so it could be worn about the neck. Aeris paid with his own credit card, terribly pleased with himself for earning his own living through his art and pocketed the small bag before heading over to collect Kamree.
"What's that for?" Kamree asked as Aeris tugged him back out onto the sidewalk.
"It's a present" Aeris said and smiled and offered no more than that.
"For your mother? For your sisters?" Kamree pressed as Aeris pulled him down the sidewalk.
"For the woman I'm seeing behind your back" Aeris grinned.
"Ah ha! I knew it!" Kamree returned the grin, "you cheating green haired, purple eyed bastard, I'd knew it would come to this."
"Well one can only put up with the Shade arrogance so long" Aeris winked.
"I'm not arrogant" Kamree protested, "you confuse me with my brother!"
By that time the garage that lent itself to be Aeris' studio was in sight.
